من المثير للدهشة أن الوظيفة الأساسية للنسيان في تكوين المعرفة بجميع أنواعها لم يتم إبرازها إلا في الأفكار العلاجية التي طورتها المذاهب النفسية المختلفة ، بينما لم يتم الاهتمام بعملها الطبيعي واليومي ، ولا دورها في تطوير المعرفة الذي تم توضيحه حقًا ، حتى في علم الأحياء – حتى الآن على الأقل.
ومن ثم ، قد يُشتبه في أن الاهتمام الأعمق بآليات النسيان وما قد يكون هيكل النسيان ، يمكن أن يشكل وسيلة للوصول إلى وظائف العقل (سواء كانت بشرية أم لا)
على الأرجح بنفس أهمية الحلم.
